Date:  Wed 21st February 2018 (4pm-6pm)

Facilitators:  Marion Sherlock & Teresa Nurse

For 2016-2017 NEPS and the Association of Teachers’/  Education Centres in Ireland have embarked on an exciting collaboration to provide training courses for teachers who would like to develop their practice in the teaching of literacy skills in the Early Years.

As part of the National Literacy Strategy, NEPS have developed a new on-line resource for use by teachers in Irish primary schools.

The Balanced Approach to Literacy Development in the Early Years draws on international research, evidence based practice and samples of that practice in Irish primary schools to give a coherent and comprehensive guide to teachers. It is also aligned with the new Primary Language Curriculum.

This is a resource that can be used by class teachers working with children from Junior Infants to First Class. It may also be helpful to schools who have identified the need to improve reading standards as part of the school-self-evaluation process.   Some schools may also like to use the resource to support the work of a professional learning community focusing on literacy.

This resource contains:

Suggestions for developing practice

Supporting resources and materials

32 short video clips of best practice in action showing teachers and children in Irish classrooms

Summary of research evidence practice in action

This 2 hour PDST workshop will explore the concept of Physical Literacy using the new Move Well, Move Often resource for primary schools by focusing on how teachers can teach Fundamental Movement Skills in a PE strand, namely the skill of DODGING in the GAMES strand.

Dodging is a locomotor skill that involves quick and sometimes deceptive changes of direction to evade or catch an opponent. The skill of dodging is evident in a wide range of playground activities and is a central component of most team sports. Dodging takes the skill of running and incorporates dynamic, fluid and coordinated movement, allowing the pupil to change direction proficiently.

This activity based workshop will include an overview of the Games Strand, Physical Literacy and Fundamental Movement Skills. Participants will be guided through a range of exciting games and activities that develop children’s dodging skills and will receive a resource booklet outlining the activities undertaken, planning tools for teaching FMS in PE and advice for teaching Games in school.

This is an active workshop, so please dress accordingly.

‘Learning is not a grade. Get the focus off the grade’

Developing Effective Numeracy Assessment in the Primary Classroom

This course will enable participants to maximise numeracy assessment within their classroom, going beyond the annual standardised test or termly class test. The content of this course provides a compelling and informative account on innovative assessment procedures that can be used to aid the teaching, learning and assessment of primary school Mathematics from First to Sixth Class. The course content will present a wealth of assessment strategies that can be used for numeracy and are also easily transferrable to other curricular areas such as literacy and SESE. Course participants will also be exposed to a range of ICT resources that can be used to enable teacher-led and pupil-led assessment, including the online platform SeeSaw which facilitates the construction of individual e-portfolios.

The aims of the workshop are to:

  • Consider the benefits and challenges associated with assessment in numeracy
  • Explore innovative assessment procedures that can be used to appraise numeracy skills across the Mathematics strands
  • Understand how manageable and efficient assessment approaches can be used to improve planning and contribute to teaching and learning
  • Ascertain the confidence and competence to use an array of assessment procedures to straight away influence assessment methods both in the classroom and on a whole-school basis

On 16 Sep 2017, the Computer Education Society of Ireland (CESI) hosted a Computer Science Symposium at NUI Maynooth and a Computer Science Community of Practice was launched at the event.  Kildare Education Centre, as part of the Association of Teachers’/Education Centres in Ireland (ATECI) is partnering CESI to host such a Community of Practice.

This is the third such event to take place in Kildare Education Centre. At this session you can find out how to introduce digital technology into your classroom and enjoy the benefit of the wisdom and support of your colleagues. This event is suitable for primary and post-primary teachers and we are looking forward to a great mix of both. This event will give you a chance to address personal needs, build relationships with other stakeholders and discuss issues relating to the development and practice of computing in education. There will also be a workshop activity to develop personal knowledge of computing and computational thinking. Further work on WeDo and MicroBits will feature.

Kildare Education Centre, in partnership with IT Tallaght, is delighted to offer an intorduction to the BBC micro:bit. This hands-on course will give you an Introduction to the micro:bit and a more advanced insight into its potential uses all in the same day. The micro:bit is essentially a programmable computer, The micro:bit is an ARM-based embedded system designed by the BBC for use in computer education in the UK. The micro:bit aligns very well with the new leaving certificate in computer science, especially the Applied Learning Task 4, but the micro:bit can equally be introduced into the primary classroom. It can be  programmed in several languages, some of which include, makecode.microbit.org, Java Script and Python. This again aligns very well with the new leaving certificate subject.

The day is broken into two sections, at approximately two hours each.

Morning:

  • Introduction to the micro:bit
  • Coding the micro:bit
  • Inputs and sensors built into the micro:bit (Radio, temperature, motion, light intensity, g force and many more)
  • Variables
  • Conditional Statements
  • Communication of micro:bits (using the radio)

 Afternoon:

  • Breadboards and the micro:bit
  • Basic circuits
  • Digital outputs on a micro:bit
  • Digital inputs on a micro:bit (using a pir motion sensor)
  • Analogue outputs
  • Analogue inputs
